Chorus on tour

The members of the Seminary Chorus are gearing up to head to the East Coast for twelve fast-paced days of fun and fellowship as we share songs of praise to our God with our brothers and sisters in the Southeastern Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Atlantic districts.

Easter greetings

In his Easter greeting, President Paul Wendland contemplates a peace not found on continents or campuses.

Legacy Society charter membership drive

We are pleased to announce that membership enrollment in the Legacy Society of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary is currently at 81 people.

Christmas greetings

President Paul Wendland shares his thoughts and sends his greetings this Christmas season.

Pray for workers

During this clergy appreciation month, seminary President Paul Wendland offers reflection on the importance of offering prayerful encouragement to young men who might be considering the public ministry.

From student to preacher

In one month, members of our senior class will be graduating from the seminary and, God-willing, receiving their first call into the public ministry. The months to follow will bring a flurry of life-changing events for these men. While the changes will be swift and exciting, their preparation to serve God’s people has been methodical and thorough. Pastor Brett Krause, a 2010 graduate, reflects on his journey from hearing God’s Word to proclaiming it.

Q&A with Luis Acosta

Walking down the halls of the seminary between classes, middler Luis Acosta blends right in with his fellow classmates -- briefcase in hand, suit coat on, and a stack of books perched in an arm. However, for Acosta, the path to the seminary has been very different from that of his fellow students.

Maintaining your seminary

On August 18, 1929, the new campus of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary was dedicated in Mequon. It is estimated that nearly 12,000 people joined to give thanks and celebrate God’s graciousness on that joyous day.

Summer Quarter on-line

Pastor Harland Goetzinger has served the members of St. Paul in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, since 2001. Living far away can make it difficult to take advantage of many of the continuing education opportunities on the seminary campus. So when the seminary offered its first on-line summer quarter course in 2010, The Apostle Paul and Leadership, Pastor Goetzinger was eager to sign up.

PSI student Rodrigo Concha

It is not a traditional classroom, but for Prof. E. Allen Sorum, teaching classes via Skype is just one more way to help students of the Pastoral Studies Institute (PSI) move farther along the path to ministry.

Customized curriculum for special students

The seminary family has been pleased to host students from sister seminaries and satellite training programs over recent years.

Continuing education

The continuing education (CE) efforts of the seminary will now operate under the program name Grow in Grace: the Institute for Continuing Education at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

New Mission: Palm Coast

When Phil Huebner heard his assignment on Call Day 2007, he noted that there was not a named congregation where he would serve. That’s because there was no congregation at all. Three years and a lot of canvassing later, there is a congregation, a church and school building, and many big plans. In a recent Q&A session, he tells us more about his work at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Winterim 2010: In the footsteps of St. Paul

In January three seminary students joined Professor Stephen Geiger on a 14-day study tour that took them through Turkey, Greece, and Rome.

Ministry by the numbers

One assignment. Two cities. Three congregations. When Pastor Nathan Berg received his first assignment to a dual parish in Cataract, Wisc. in 2004, he was prepared to serve two small congregations in one small community. However, God had other plans. In a recent Q & A session, he tells us more…

Continuing education

Since 1863 the seminary has existed to prepare pastors for the world-wide gospel ministry of WELS. In recent years, our purpose has expanded. Today, our stated purpose includes providing opportunities for continuing education (CE) to pastors and other called workers in our fellowship.

Book signing

President Paul Wendland introduced Professor Emeritus John C. Jeske at an event commemorating the publication of Jeske’s new book Treasures Old and New. Students, faculty, family, and friends gathered in the dormitory commons for a book signing co-hosted by Northwestern Publishing House.

Student adoption update

According to recent estimates, the population of the U.S. is at just under 308 million. Of these, about 5 million people – or 1.7% – are adoptees. Of children aged 18 and under, approximately 2.5% have been adopted. A lot of love and mutual blessings result from these adoptions.

Christmas concerts

The Seminary Chorus will present its annual Christmas Concerts on December 13, 2009, at 3:00 & 7:00 p.m. The program, entitled Christians, Rejoice, includes new and interesting arrangements of well-known Christmas hymns such as Luther’s “All Praise to Thee, Eternal God,” “Silent Night,” and “What Child Is This.” Also included are works scored for piano and choir that feature several of the choir’s very gifted accompanists.

Students serve

Justin Dauck hasn’t graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary yet, but he is already preaching and teaching among God’s people. After serving his vicar year at Open Bible Lutheran Church in Whiteriver, AZ, Justin didn’t return to the seminary for his senior year like most of his classmates. Instead, he accepted an emergency call to assist Missionary Dan Myers with the work in Cameroon. He shared his experiences in a recent letter.
